Short Story Reading Challenge

Following the newly made plan to participate in blogger reading challenges that track my ongoing reading, I've signed up for The Short Story Reading Challenge, hosted by Kate's Book Blog. She has suggested several different ways of approaching this reading project, from reading ten stories, to reading five or ten collections, to reading whatever you want. Just read some short stories, people! This is a reader-friendly design.

Here are some books of short stories that I've pulled from the shelves. My plan for the Short Story Reading Challenge is to read as many as I can, including the first three that are already underway.

  • The Broadview Anthology of Victorian Short Stories, edited by Dennis Denisoff

  • Other Voices, Other Vistas, an international collection edited by Barbara H. Solomon

  • The Stories of Mary Gordon

  • The Oxford Book of American Short Stories, edited by Joyce Carol Oates

  • Paris Stories by Mavis Gallant

  • William Trevor: The Collected Stories

  • The Old Forest and Other Stories by Peter Taylor

  • Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri

  • Lucky Girls by Nell Freudenberger

  • Victorian Detective Stories by Michael Cox

  • Great Irish Short Stories, edited by Vivian Mercier

  • Some stories published in various numbers of Tin House

  • Some stories published in The New Yorker prior to 1950, available on CD ROM.
I hope that readers of short fiction are already familiar with the weekly radio program of short story readings, Selected Shorts; it is available as a podcast. This week's program will feature stories by John Updike and Yiyun Li.
