Illustrations for Christina Rossetti's Poems

After reading Gwen Raverat's 1952 memoir Period Piece earlier this year, and being charmed by her wood engravings, I have been paying more attention to wood cuts as an art form and to the interweaving of text and book illustration. Thus, it was a pleasure to learn about the earnestness with which poet Christina Rossetti (1830 - 1894) set about integrating images into her books of poetry.

This wood engraving is "Buy from Us with a Golden Curl" (1862) by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, an llustration for Christina Rossetti's Goblin Market and Other Poems (Image scanned by George P. Landow for the Victorian Web.)

Rossetti's poetry was illustrated by numerous others, including Arthur Rackham. At left is his White and Golden Lizzie Stood, an illustration for Rossetti's Goblin Market.

There's also a book: Christina Rossetti and Illustration (Ohio University Press, 2002) by Lorraine Janzen Kooistra.

I loved this post. How interesting and fun. I will definitely check out the entire poem. The woodcut is beautiful. Thanks for bringing this to Sunday Salon. Wisteria

Wisteria, I was not sure that posting about a poem would work out for the Sunday Salon, and your comment is appreciated.
